Men may come, and they may go, eh? Well, how far up their own ass may they get before they have to take stock and turn around? The original piece represents a lack of so much, including diversity, equity, inclusivity, and criticality. The language and sentiment behind the original piece illustrate the power a certain kind of men (white, hetero-normative, able-bodied) had. They imposed themselves upon the environment and ignored other people’s rights. They gave themselves permission to come and leave as they pleased. Take, not give. Colonize and appropriate, not include and celebrate. Borrow and ignore, not care. Whether or not some like it, we must take note of the borrowing (stealing) and ignoring (murdering) that has happened in Canada’s history and happens now. These are two facets of Canada’s history that did and continue to happen. In time, it is all we can become known for if we don’t begin actively listening and critically thinking. The absurdity of Man May Crawl Out Own Ass speaks to the absurdity of certain people’s perspectives.
